The Lowell Chapter of the National Honor Society was formed in 1964 and was granted its charter on October 9th. Since its formation, over 1500 students have been inducted into our chapter of NHS.
Five faculty advisors have worked with NHS students at Lowell High School over its forty-eight year history: Alice Wessel, Virginia Fonger, Jill Van Antwerp, Gary Fredline, and Shelley Swift.
Over the course of our history the Lowell Chapter has taken part in both group and individual service projects. Our members have volunteered their time in numerous ways in our community—students mentor and tutor high school, middle school and elementary students, collect food and clothing for Flat River Outreach Ministries and have spent time with residents of the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. Our chapter has been involved in fundraising activities for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Salvation Army, and the Cystic Fibrosis Association. National Honor Society members have raised thousands of dollars for the charities we’ve supported, and we are proud to be an active part of our community.
